A UAE nursing offer is worth taking if the package leaves you more each month than your NHS pay does after rent. The table below shows the lowest monthly package that matches common Agenda for Change pay points, worked out with the same calculation as the Landing Check. This guide does not quote UAE nurse salaries: no official body publishes them, and the figures on recruiter sites vary too much to rely on.

What a UAE package needs to match your NHS pay
Each row starts from an NHS Agenda for Change pay point in England for 2026/27 [1], with the inner London high cost area supplement where it says so [2], and a household. It counts UK take-home pay after income tax and National Insurance, less UK rent and council tax for the area. On the UAE side it counts rent, the housing fee and, for the family, school fees. The figure is the monthly package, in cash, that keeps you level. The smaller line adds the cost of the move spread over two years.
| UK pay point | Household | UK pay a year | UAE package needed a month | Run it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Band 5, top of band | On your own, outside London, moving to Dubai | £39,043 | AED 16,000AED 18,000 to also repay the move in 2 years | Check with your figures |
| Band 6, top of band, plus the inner London supplement | On your own, in London, moving to Dubai | £56,863 | AED 17,500AED 19,500 to also repay the move in 2 years | Check with your figures |
| Band 6, top of band | A couple, partner not working, outside London, moving to Abu Dhabi | £48,117 | AED 17,500AED 19,500 to also repay the move in 2 years | Check with your figures |
| Band 7, top of band | A family with two children (7 and 11, mid-range schools), outside London, moving to Dubai | £56,515 | AED 35,500AED 39,500 to also repay the move in 2 years | Check with your figures |
Food, bills, transport and leisure are left out on both sides; add your own figures in the Landing Check. If the hospital provides accommodation, the cash package you need is lower. Enter the offer as it is written, with its allowances, and the check works out the rest. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have their own pay scales.
Which regulator licenses you
You need a licence from the health regulator for the emirate where you will work:
- Dubai: the Dubai Health Authority (DHA), through its Sheryan portal [3]. Dubai Healthcare City has its own regulator for facilities inside it [4], so a job there may follow different steps; ask the employer.
- Abu Dhabi: the Department of Health (DoH) [5].
- Sharjah: the Sharjah Health Authority, which issues its own professional licences [6].
- Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah: the Ministry of Health and Prevention (MOHAP) [7].
MOHAP has announced a national platform that will issue one licence valid across the UAE [8]. No source yet confirms it is live, so apply to the regulator where the job is.
The licensing steps for a UK registered nurse
The regulators share one set of rules, the Unified Healthcare Professional Qualification Requirements [3]. In outline:
Check your qualification
The Registered Nurse title needs a nursing bachelor's degree of at least three years' full-time study [5].
Check the experience rule
Khaleej Times reported in 2022 that registered nurses with a bachelor's degree and registration from listed countries, the UK among them, no longer need two years' experience, provided they qualified within the last two years or have no gap in practice [9]. Other reports still give two years, so confirm it against the requirements document for your emirate.
Primary source verification
The DataFlow Group checks your degree, registration and work history directly with the organisations that issued them [10]. In Dubai you cannot book the licensing exam without a positive verification report [10]. DataFlow publishes no fee on an official page that this guide could find, so ask for a quote when you apply.
The exam, or an exemption
Professionals who hold an active licence from certain regulators are exempt from the licensing exam, and the exemption covers the exam only, not verification or experience [3]. Whether your NMC registration qualifies, and on what conditions, is set out in the requirements document's list of regulators. Where you do sit an exam, DHA uses Prometric [11] and DoH uses Pearson Professional Assessments [12].
Licence activation by the employer
Your NMC registration
Good standing. The regulator will ask for a good standing certificate. The NMC's version is the Certificate of Current Professional Status, requested through NMC Online, and it is valid for three months from the date it is issued [15]. DHA accepts a certificate up to six months old [13], so the NMC's three months is the limit that binds. Request it close to when you apply.
Keeping your registration while abroad. The NMC fee rose from £120 to £143 a year on 1 October 2026 [16]. You revalidate every three years with 450 practice hours, and hours worked overseas can count, but only hours worked while you were on the NMC register [17].
If you let it lapse. To rejoin, you need 450 hours of practice in the previous three years, or 750 in the previous five, and again only hours worked while you were on the register count. Otherwise you take a return to practice course or the Test of Competence [18]. So UAE hours help you come back only if you kept paying the NMC fee while you were away.
Your NHS Pension
With two years or more of membership, your NHS Pension benefits are kept as deferred benefits when you leave, without an application, and are paid from your normal pension age [19]. A transfer out is possible only to a registered overseas scheme (a QROPS), and only after you leave NHS employment [19]. A 25% tax charge applies to the part of a transfer above the overseas transfer allowance, and the exemptions depend on where you live and where the scheme is [20]. Get regulated advice before any transfer; the Pensions guide explains what non-residence means for your other UK savings.
Hours, visa and health cover
- Hours. In the private sector the normal limit is 8 hours a day or 48 a week, with overtime capped at 2 hours a day and paid at least 25% extra [21]. Government hospitals follow public sector rules, so ask about shift patterns.
- Visa. The employer sponsors your work permit and residence visa, and the Labour Law says an employer may not charge the worker recruitment or employment fees and costs, directly or indirectly [22] [23].
- Health cover. Private employers in every emirate must provide health insurance from 1 January 2025 [24]. Ask whether your family is covered too.
What to ask about the package
Ask, and get the answer in the offer letter:
- whether accommodation is provided, or paid as an allowance, and how much
- whether the employer pays an annual flight home, and for whom
- who pays the licensing, verification and exam fees, and whether you repay them if you leave early
- the basic salary on its own, because your end-of-service gratuity is worked out on basic pay. The How to Read a UAE Job Offer guide explains why
Next steps
- Run the Landing Check with your own salary, city and household; any row in the table above opens it with that pay point filled in.
- Put an offer through the Package Decoder to split basic pay from allowances.
- Use the Gratuity Calculator to see what the basic salary builds up over a contract.
